Welcome to the cozy corner of kitchen makeovers. I’m super excited to  kick off my DIY series that’ll give your kitchen a fresh new look! Let's start by painting your cabinets to look like new wood!

– Dark walnut minwax stain   – mustard color minwax stain  – cheap brushes – peach base color (linked below) – grip seal primer – floetrol  ( important for nice brush strokes ) – Minwax matte polycrylic

Sanding is optional. I sanded the edges of my cabinets where paint was chipping and applied a coat of seal gripper. The strongest primer I've ever worked with.

Premix Your Stain Colors

You can make you cabinets any shade of wood. I wanted something neutral.  To do this I combined dark walnut and mustard wood stain.

Here's what my custom stain colors looked like.

CAUTION RAW FOOTAGE

Here's my kitchen in it's raw ugly messy state!! This it what it looked like before I painted the wood effect on the cabinets.  Back in 2014 I was really loving the shabby chic style which explains the outdated look. Stripping the kitchen wasn't an option so we had to make it work with some paint.

The Peachy Base Color

Apply an even coat of this peachy base color! Allow this to dry!  Click below for exact colored used....

Building the depth! 

Wet the surface and brush on the peach colored paint. Then gently dip your brush into water-based Minwax dark walnut stain and create the wood pattern

Get that Grain Going!

Start applying your premixed wood stain. Darker color first. I brushed on and wiped off. Repeat these steps until it's tacky. You'll notice a pretty wood grain start to appear. Be sure to apply in the direction of the wood grain. Vertical and horizontal strokes.

Changing the tone! 

Allow 24 for the previous step to dry. Apply a transparent coat of the light color stain that you premixed.  The one that looks like mustard. This make the wood look warmer.

SEAL THE DEAL! 

That's it!  You should have a beautiful wood effect on your cabinets or furniture.  I chose to seal my wood effect with polycrylic! BEST STUFF EVER!  I  did my dinning table with this 2 years ago still no water rings.
