Epicly Delicious
Boy oh Boy did I go through the spinner today. What started off as a tutorial for dinnerware turned into rustic coasters. Not that that isn’t good but just to say the least DIY is all about trial and error. You never know what will turn out great and what will be your most epic fail! When my effort to make copper trimmed dinnerware failed I was surfing through the photos from the photo shoot and happened to realize that these wood coasters are stinking cute. 😀 (yes I still did the photoshoot…didn’t want all my props to go to waist) So…what was a quick 3 minute DIY turned out to be better then the one that took me over an hour. Why is it always like that? Life is epicly delicious. From Epic fail to epic win. 😀
Why I Failed
Oh by the way if you want to see how epicly I failed… (DOWN BELOW) Look at that paint!! How terrible is that. Yes I tried with a brush and I tried with a stick..until I finally gave up. I was surfing on amazon and found a porcelein paint that was food safe and I was super excited to use it. Unfortunately the paint was way to transparent to work with. The consistency was nice though. lol but it’s not like it helped any. After only about 5 Layers I gave up. lol Yep after 5 layers it was still looking see through.  (it was the pebeo brand paint.)
And when I say transparent I mean TRANSPARENT !! (that’s one coat below)
Anyways onto the good stuff. 😀
What you’ll need
- Miter Saw (or hand saw)
- Wood Log
So depending on the size of your miter saw you can only get wood that is so wide. With my miter saw I was able to cut a 4 inch wide log. Which turned out perfect for the coasters.   (Wear safety glasses and take all safety precautions)
I cut my pieces about 3/4 to 1 inches in thickness. These took me under 1 Minute to make each one, and they were absolutely free. Can’t beat that 😀 .
Here’s a snippet of what my miter saw looks like.  This tutorial is more for inspiration then a full on DIY. It’s so easy to make it speaks for it self. 😀
Once you cut down your slices you can sand them down for a smoother finish or leave them rustic chic. 😀 (I left mine rustic)
And here’s how they look all done and purdy.. (you can tell I had more fun doing the photo-shoot then doing the DIY. hehe) 😀 That’s the beauty of DIY.
Oh my gosh. Yes my copper trimmed plates. lol Don’t want you guys to think I was lying bout that paint. My secret weapon to get this look was the copper pen in the photos below. Only sad fact is you can’t eat off of it and it comes off after a few washes. Yes I tried curing it in the oven… Turned gunmetal color.. Not very pretty. So it’s only for decor purposes. If your a food photographer it would probably work great for props. 😀
Here’s a snippet of the copper edges close up.
And that’s a wrap. Thank you so much for joining me today. What an adventurous day. 😀 If you make these pretty coasters don’t forget to tag me on Instagram. Can’t wait to see your creations.
Here’s a cute Pinnable to add to your favorite board.
Tootles.. till Next time my beautiful Craftholics. 😀
I’ve had a Christmas tree trunk (Doug fir, I think), branch-less, sitting out in a side yard…guess I know what to do with it now. Coasters it is! Oh, great…one more project on my endless list. 🙂
😀 That’s sounds like a plan..I love recycled projects. I’m glad you found a purpose for your branch-less tree. Don’t forget to tag me on Instagram I would love to see your projects. 😀
