Gold Pillows..
Gold leaf has been around for quite a while now and I’ve seen it used so many different ways.. The one thing that was always stuck in the back of my head was ” how would it work on fabric?” I’ve seen it done before but mostly simple things like brushstrokes so I’ve decided to try something new. ..Okay so you know when you go to the mall and you see these cute little crop tops with a little pineapple in the center. I always loved the idea of the pineapple.. I’m just not crazy about the crop top. 😀 So I put two and two together and decided to make a gold leaf pineapple throw pillow. Weird… The things that inspire me. hehe 😀
What you’ll need
- Pineapple stencil
- White sharpie ( or black)
- fabric (I purchased upholstery fabric from Joanns)
- Pillow insert (recycled from thrift store for $1.50)
- scissors
- Gold leaf
- gilding adhesive
- brushes
I printed my pineapple on paper. Cut it out and started stenciling. (here’s a free printable)
I used a white sharpie but as you can see in the photo (right bottom corner) black works just as great. To keep the pillow neat I chose to go with the polka dot pattern.
I used a smaller detail brush to apply the gilding adhesive on. This part is tricky. You need to layer it on because the fabric will soak a lot of it in. I ended up doing three thick coats. You do not need to let the coats dry completely in between… (photo below is showing some dry and some still wet)
The gilding needs to be sticky to the touch so if it’s not sticky then you don’t have enough gilding. I used half my bottle of gilding for this pillow .. just to give you an idea. You need to use a lot. I let my gilding dry for about 40 minutes and then started gold leafing away. 😀 I used the same technique as from one of my previous throw pillow tutorials to construct the pillow together. If your new to pillow making check out my tutorial here.
Here’s where I got my gold leaf. Best deal I found so far. 100 pieces of gold leaf for $6 plus free shipping….Can’t beat that. With that price you can foil a whole dresser. 😀
And that’s it. Simple enough but still a statement piece. 😀
Loving succulents nowadays..
How lovely is that faux fur… Can’t wait to make throw pillow out of it. 😀

Do you know how one would go about adding gold leaf to fabric that youll want to be able to wash? Is there a sealant? Or can you use Fabric Fusion and iron it?
